A series of fundamental studies was conducted on broadening the applicability of ion chromatography in order to obtain better separations and a shorter analytical run time simultaneously. It was found that the components of the mobile phase could be modified to give the desired results in three areas : 1) the addition of a polyvalent cation allowed a selective decrease in the retention time of sulfate, 2) the addition of a weak base allowed a selective decrease in the retention time of the system peak, and 3) the addition of boric acid allowed a selective increase in the retention times of α-hydroxycarboxylic acid ions in non-suppressed and photometric ion chromatography. In each case, the mechanism of the phenomenon was clarified in order to make it possible to predict the retention behaviors so as to increase the applicability of the proposed methods for real analyses.
