Analyses of trace biologically essential or toxic ionic compounds found in the environment are very important. However, the lack of sensitivity and interference caused by coexisting components are often serious problems. To determine trace levels of aluminum-, copper-ions, and inorganic and carboxylic anions without the above problems, new preconcentration and analytical methods have been developed. Three methcds for the selective preconcentration of aluminum-, copper-, and inorganic- and carboxylic-ions, respectively, are shown below. 1) Salicyli-deneamino-2-thiophenol was immobilized on glass bead supports to be used as the column packing material. Aluminum ion was concentrated selectively on the column and eluted with nitric acid. The eluate was analyzed off-line by atomic absorption spectrometry or analyzed on-line by flow injection analysis using pyrocatechol violet. These methods were able to determine ppt-ppb levels of aluminum in environmental samples and were suitable for its state-analysis. 2) Batho-cuproinesulfonic acid was immobilized on glass bead supports to be used as the column packing material. Copper ion was concentrated selectively on the column and eluted with nitric acid. The eluate was analyzed on-line by flow injection analysis using bathocuproinesulfonic acid. This method was able to determine ppb-ppt levels of copper in environmental samples. 3) To preconcentrate trace inorganic and carboxylic anions, an anion-exchange column was connected on-line to a photometric ion chromatographic system using p-toluenesulfonic acid as an eluent. Simultaneous determination of required anions at ppt-ppb levels was achieved by the system.
