The improvement of reproducibility and sensitivity of Curie point pyrolysis gas chromatography by the use of a matrix modifier and the introduction of statistical methods to data handling was investigated. In the conventional method, heat transformation from pyrolysis foil to the sample could not become complete and results in the various problems of pyrolysis GC. To overcome the problems the sample was pyrolyzed in the presence of a matrix modifier, which consists of a mixture of metal powder and metal salt. Effects of metal powder and metal salt on pyrolysis of several phenylalkylamines were investigated. They acted as a heating medium when the pyrolysis foil reached on exothermic state and facilitated effective pyrolysis. On the basis of these results, some medicines were determined in the range from a few μg to about 50 μg by this method. Their relative standard deviations were less than 3%. In addition, cluster analysis and principal component analysis were introduced into qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, respectively in order to improve the experimental errors. In this method, a calibration curve was calculated using plural peak intensities for standards and sample simultaneously although it was made by only one peak intensity for standards in the ordinary method. It was concluded that this method can be applied to the determination of polymer compounds.
