An analytical method for the determination of heavy metals incorporated in PET film was investigated using punched-out PET film introduction and direct atomization graphite furnace AAS. Commercially available PET films (thickness is about 0.12mm) were punched out with a 1mmφ (or 3mmφ) puncher. The ashing condition was carefully chosen to avoid fusion of PET film which interferes with complete charring of the sample. The optimum heating conditions were as follows : drying at 120℃ (30s), ashing-1 at 120〜650℃ (60s), ashing-2 at 650〜1000℃ (30s), atomizing at 3000℃ (7〜10s) and cleaning at 3000℃ (3s). Concentrations of heavy metals incorporated in PET films ranged from 10^<-8> to 10^<-4>g/g, accordingly experimental conditions such as the volume of samples, the analytical line of the elements and the flow rate of purge gas were also optimized. The concentrations of metals (Sb, Mn, Co) were determined using the calibration curves obtained by the standard addition method. The results by the present method which requires no sample pretreatment were in good agreement with those obtained by flame AAS after acid digestion.
