Radiological effects on the regional environment around the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) were assessed using both environmental radiological monitoring data and doses evaluated by the mathematical models. 14C and 129I have sufficiently long half-lives 5,730-y and 1.6 × 107-y respectively, and readily migrate through the ecological environment, achieving widespread distribution. To improve the accuracy of the dose calculation by mathematical models, site-specific constants for the deposition velocity and the weathering factor for 129I were estimated from environmental monitoring data. With site-specific constants, the calculated values were improved to show good agreement with the measured values. The age-dependence of the public dose was also investigated. A realistic human respiratory tract model was investigated to estimate the age-dependent deposition of inhaled particles. A chronic ingestion model was also investigated to estimate the influence of start age of intake of radionuclide in foods. However, the investigations showed that age was not a critical factor for the dose assessment under normal operation of the TRP. The assessment showed that there were no significant radiological effects on the environment and the public due to 25 years operating of the TRP.
