The University of Tokyo The computation of emotional information has been one of the most important and challenging areas left all the time for future research. It is generally said that we are living in the information era supported by computers and electronic communication media. However,if we carefully watch what's happening inside computers which have been processing practical applications, computers process and communicate only rational information. In practice, almost no emotional information has been processed by computers so far. In the real world, emotional information plays key roles in a wide spectrum of important scenes ranging from personal affairs such as marrying somebody, buying expensive things, making friends and enjoying life to global decisions of national and international policies. For computers to be able to process and communicate emotional information, it must be observed and under-stood by the computers directly. The core of science consists of understanding through observation, modeling through the generalization and abstraction of what observed, and proving what modeled matches with what observed. Technology realizes what made clear through scientific study so as to fulfill the needs of society. To do so, engineering model is developed which is expected to satisfy the needs, and is tested to prove that it actually does. Computer scientific and technological study of emotional information begins from direct observation and modeling of emotional information by computers. Physically, emotional information takes the forms of facial, gestural and verbal expressions, besides literal, symbolic and pictorial expressions towards which past studies have been inclined. In a human body, the major part of emotional information is expressed facially often accompanied with verbal expressions. The human brain dedicates a significant part of it to control facial muscles. Gestural expressions, particularly hand expressions, serve to convey emotional information. For us human being, hands are most versatile because the largest percentage of time we spend in our life to train the control of body muscles are on the hands. The human brain dedicates also a fairly large part of it to control hand muscles. The two parts of the brain, one to control facial muscles and the other to control hands muscles, are close together.
