A study was made on the effects of administration in large dose of thiamine on the O_2-uptake, and ascorbic acid concentration in the brain of mouse during normal condition and also during the excitatory state of stress. Exposure to stress was made by hypoxia and vibration. Thiamine, 20μg per day was administered for 7 days preceding the experiments. (1) An administration in large dose of thiamine decreases the O_2-uptake in the brain during hypoxic stress. (2) During hypoxic stress, generally, ascorbic acid concentration in the brain is markedly lowered. An administration of thiamine in large dose prior to the experiment does not influence the decrease in ascorbic acid concentration. (3) When vibration stimuli are applied during hypoxic stress, the decrease in ascorbic acid concentration does not take place. However, when thiamine in large dose is administered prior to the experiment the effect of the vibration stimuli in contradicting the decrease in ascorbic acid concentration becomes incomplete, and a decrease in ascorbic acid concentration results. From the above results it is supposed that the administration of thiamine in large dose influences the metabolism in the cerebrum during certain forms of stress.
