Over the past few years, interest in Geographic Information Systems(GIS) has been increasing significantly. Despite the existence of commercial products that are suitable for particular domains of applications, GIS systems are still far from having achieved a fully satisfactory technological development. Integration and interoperability problems have made it very difficult, until now, to speak in terms of "general purpose" environments for geographic applications. For this reason, DataBase Research Group in WuHan University(WDDBG)proposed the SAMS project to apply Object-Oriented and distributed database technology to implement an GIS platform for General Applications. Comparing with available systems, SAMS provide uniform models, languages and physical data organization structures which allow users to represent, store, retrieve and manipulate geographic objects and their relationships together with the conventional alphanumeric type of information efficiently.
