Epithelial cells were collected from the lips of children with or without riboflavin deficiency, and suspended in 3 ml of saline. To the suspension of the epithelial cells was added 0.5 ml of the lysozyme solution (40μg/ml). The mixture was kept at 37℃ for 5 days, and morphological changes in the epithelial cells were examined under a phase-microscope. The degeneration of the epithelial cells was found more markedly in number as well as in degree in the specimens obtained from children with riboflavin deficiency than in those of the control.
