It is said that γ-aminobutyric acid is converted to β-alanine and glycine via the a-hydroxy or β-hydroxy form by oxidation of the carbon chain. To verify this, γ-aminobutyric acid was experimentally loaded and the glycine and β-alanine in the blood and urine were examined. With massive loading, there was little rise in blood glycine and no excretion of β-alanine, glycine or the bound glycine in the urine. It suggests that though the above metabolic pathway cannot be wholly denied, it is not a main route.
