A comparative examination was made on the nutritional effect of a new thiamine derivative, TTFD, synthesized by Matsukawa and Yurugi (1957), with that of thiamine. The growth of rats, weighing 45 to 75g, receiving daily oral administration of TTFD equivalent to 5 μg of thiamine was approximately the same as that in case of 5 μg of thiamine. The thiamine content of the liver, kidneys, heart and brain of rats given daily TTFD equivalent to 5 μg of thiamine for 35 to 90 days was nearly the same as that of rats given the same amount of thiamine. The increase of thiamine content in the liver, kidneys, heart and brain of the animals weighing from 120 to 160g one hour after subcutaneous injection of TTFD equivalent to 100μg of thiamine was also approximately the same as that in case of the same amount of thiamine. The entrance of TTFD into human erythrocytes was more remarkable than that of thiamine in the addition of the vitamin to the suspension of the erythrocytes. The increase of thiamine content in the erythrocytes was almost the same as that in case of thiamine propyl disulfide.
