With the objective of applying β-hydroxy-γ-aminobutyric acid clinically, various physiological actions were studied using the racemate. The toxicity by subcutaneous or intravenous injection is low (LD_<50> 5864μg/g, subcutaneous in mice) but when injected intrathecally, the toxicity is strong. Tests in rabbits showed that a temporary drop in blood pressure and acceleration of respiratory rate took place. Electroencephalograms following intracysternal injection in dogs revealed an average amplitude of 50-100 μV and slow waves of 3-5-8 cycles. Electrocardiograms recorded at the same time showed auriculo-ventricular dissociation. No significant changes were noted in the electromyogram or blood picture. These results show that this substance cannot be clinically administered intrathecally.
