Genetic analyses have been made on the three complementary gene systems for maltose fermentation in Saccharomyces breeding stocks. One of the systems was identified as an intra-cistronic complementation between two mutant alleles, ma_<α-1> and ma_<α-2> at the MA_α locus which is one of the author's five polymeric genes for maltose fermentation and is allelic with Winge's MA_1. The second system is composed with one of the complementary genes in the former system, i.e., ma_<α-2>, and a mutant allele of MA_β, ma_<β-2>, which is also one of the polymeric genes for maltose fermentation but non-allelic with MA_α. In the third system, again, ma_<α-2> has shown the complementary activity for a gene "L". It is evident that gene L could not show any linkage with the five authentic polymeric MA genes but this gene was attributed to the hyper-production of α-glucosidase in combination with the MA_δ gene. A mutant allele, ma_<α-2> is playing a central role in all of those systems but the situation of complementation at the second and the third system are quite different from the first one, because they are interactions between non-allelic genes and must be called the inter-cistronic complementation. The phenomenon of the inter-cistronic complementation in the α-glucosidase system suggest the subunit structure of the active enzyme. The origine of the L gene is discussed.
