Assuming that a specific finding cited from the literature with respect to the balanced growth of Aerobacter aerogenes in terms of RNA content of the microbial cells vs. the value of its specific growth rate could be applied to an analysis of lag phase in the unbalanced growth and in addition, assuming that the rate of RNA synthesis in a lag period of growth could be represented by a first-order reaction model, the lag phase of the microbial growth was analysed quantitatively by using a digital computer. The values of several empirical constants required for this culculation with a series of equations were determined respectively by pertinent experiments using the strain of Aer. aerogenes. Two significant assumptions needed for this computation were fully discussed with reference to the experimental data on a specific strain of Hansenula anomala ; the strain used here was for convenience of experimentation. Although the strains in this account were different-one primarily for the calculation of growth pattern, while the other for discussing the assumptions-, the experimental data obtained so far regarding both type of experiment seem to be consistent, satisfying a nucleic approach to the lag period of microbial cell growth.
