1) Forty one strains of bacteria which were obtained from the contaminated penicillin tank, the air and the cotton filter, were identified. Nineteen of them were aerobic sporeformers, two Aerobacter, three Proteus, four Alkaligenes, six Saicina, and seven Micrococcus.2) Penicillin tolerance and extracellular penicillinase of each strain were tested. Bac. cereus and Bac. subtilis type bacteria had the strongest exo-enzyme. Bac. lautus and Bac. fusiformis had no ability to detroy penicillin in spite of their aerobic sporeforming nature. Gram-nagative rods which had a strong tolerance to penicillin, such as Acrobacter, Proteus, and Alkaligenes, and gram-positive coccus, such as Sarchina, and Micrococcus appered to have no considerable capacity for destruction of penicillin.3) It was considered that there exists a close connection between protease and extracellular penicillinase of each strain.
