The sedimentation rate of the activated sludge in the municipal sewage-treatment plants in Tokyo area was observed to assess the equivalent size, d_l of the floc. Values of d_l were several hundred microns for the normal sludge, whereas the d, value for the bulking sludge was about one-fifth the previous values.A discrepancy in the assessment of d_l values between the current and the previous studies was discussed. A relationship between the quality of supernatant liquid from the sedimentation and the ecological observation of the floc was presented. So for the floc which was composed predominantly of the specific protozoa fixed on the floc surface was most recommendable for obtaining the better quality of the supernatant liquid, though the problem how to realize artificially the specific species of protozoa remains to be studied.Stress was placed on the significance of the species of fauna underlying the normal-and/or malfunctions of the biological treatment of sewage.
