This represents basic research on sewage treatment by the activated sludge process. In the preliminary studies, BOD_5 and hte activities of sludge were investigated; where the activities express the ability of BOD removal or O_2 uptake by the metabolism of removed BOD, respectively.Next, the reaction kinetics models on removal of soluble organic matters and O_2 uptake by the activated sludge were introduced from the enzyme kinetics of substrate inhibition consdering autolysis of sludge, where S×a instead of amount of enzyme and BOD_5 as the index of organic matters are induced.-(dC)/(dt)=(a_1K_1CS)/(a_<01>(K_2+C+K_3C^2))-(b_1)/(b_0)K_4S(dO)/(dt)=(a_2K'_1CS)/(a_<02>(K'_2+C+K'_3C^2))+K'_4LS S : sludge mass, C : BOD_5 concentration of solution, L : ult-BOD of sludge, a, b : activity of sludge, K : velosity constant.The activity values have important significances in the mixed culture system. In many experiments using various kinds of substrate and activated sludge, the characteristics of velocity constants and activities of sludge are identified. Moreover, the effects of enviromental conditions, such as pH, temperature etc. were investigated as influences on the change of activity. From these, the following conclusions were obtained : The proposed models are capable of being applied for the computation of soluble organic matter removal and O_2 uptake in the activated sludge system.Activated sludge, well acclimated to pH, temperature and various substrates usually has high activity on BOD removal.
