Cholesterol was oxidized mainly to Δ^4-cholestene-3-one using A-16 strain (Penicillium sp.) isolated from soil. Above twenty percent (20%) of cholesterol (100mg/100ml of medium) was converted into Δ^4-cholestene-3-one by culture in 4 to 6 days. A-16 strain oxidized cholestene-3β-ol, Δ^4-cholestene-3β-ol and converted each of them into cholestane-3-one, Δ^4-cholestene-3-one. It was, however, not able to oxidize cholestene-3α-ol, coprostan-3α, and coprostan-3β-ol. From these results, it is assumed that this microorganism is extremely limited in the oxidation ability on the 3-hydroxyl group.
