Various operating conditions required for conducting with ease and economy the vaccum filtration of two sorts of sludges from nightsoil and domestic sewage treatment were studied. In both cases, a pretreatment by elutriation of fine particles from the sludges was found to be effective in reducing the magnitudes of specific resistances of the cakes in filtration, provided each sludge was allowed to stand for an adequate period after the pretreatment.Generally, after too long a period, each sludge bacame unsuitable for filtration. In the case of digested sludge from domestic sewage in particular, the addition of FeSO_4.7HO_2 together with Ca(OH)_2 (as coagulating agents) to the elutriated sludge greatly facilitated the process of vaccum filtration. On the other hand, the coagulating agents were not necessary for filtration of digested nightsoil.
