Severe hepatic damage was induced by CCl_4 inhalation in rats treated with phenobarbital. The curative effects of tetrahydrofolic acid (THFA) vs. folic acid (FA) were examined with hematological picture, urinary excretion of formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU), liver histology and dihydrofolic acid (DHFA) reductase activity as indicators. CCl_4-inhalation resulted in the increase of neutrocyte and the decrease of lymphocyte. The activity of hepatic DHFA reductase was greatly reduced with the increase of urinary output of FIGLU. Urinary excretion of FIGLU returned to normal on treatment with THFA 5 mg/kg s. c. but not with FA.
