Growth-inhibition action of sodium lauryl sulfate (L.S.) on fungi was observed when used together with p-hydroxybenzoic acid butyl ester (P.B.), its methyl ester (P.M.), vitamin K_3 (V. K_3), and sodium penta-chlorophenol (P.C.P.).L.S., when used together with P.B., P.M., V. K_3,or P.C.P., increased the growth-inbibiting effects and could diminish the required amounts of these agents.On CZAPEK agar media, however, L.S. and P.M. exert only an additive action and not multiplying.V.K_3,when used alone, exerted no effect on Mucor and Phizopus species, but was effective when used together with L.S..When used in solid media together with above chemicals, L.S. is not so effective as in liquid media. This is surely due to the difficulties of the fungicide to penetrate into the spores.The author designates the substances like L.S. as an assistant fungicide which, when used alone, exerts a little fungicidal activity but increase the power of another fungicider when used together with the latter.
