We have isolated a strain of anaerobic bacteria, which is a rod-shaped, Gram positive and motile organism producing orange pigment in corn mash culture. This bacterium was found to be useful for the fermentative retting of barks of Ganpi tree (Wikstroemia sikokuana Fr. et Sav.). he characteristics of this bacterium were observed to be almost the same as Cl. felsineum (CARBONE and TOMBALTO) BERGEY et al. However, the former bacterium was found to be different from the latter in the following points : larger size of vegetative cell (0.7〜1.2×2.4×7.2 μ) and no liquefaction of glucose gelatin. We propose to name this bacterium Clostridium felsineum var. sikokuanum, for it has been isolated from Ganpi tree in Sikoku island. When 10 cc of corn mash culture of this bacterium were used to inoculate 300 cc of the medium containing barks of Ganpi tree and 0.5% soy beAn cake, adjusting the initial pH to 7.0,and then keeping at 37℃ for 24 hrs, the fermentative retting went on smoothly. The amount of calcium pectate in refined fibres was found to be 1.16% while in the dry raw material it was 7.4%. The refined fibres were completely separated from other cells, so that they were found to be suitable for paper making. This bacterium was also found to be useful for the fermentative retting of barks of Mitsumata tree, paper mulberry tree, flax, hemp, ramie, jute and leaves of Newzealand hemp.
