As for the effects of malt-rootlets on the submerged culture of E. Ashbyii following results were obtained.(1) Malt-rootlets retard the growth, and accelerate the autolysis of mycelium.(2) As the production of riboflavin has been increased remarkably by the addition of the malt-rootlets, it is recognized that perhaps the riboflavin-producing factor exisists in them. By adding 1〜2% of the malt-rootlets to the basal medium, which contains peptone as a suitable nitrogen source, the riboflavin production rises to about twice as compared with the control.(3) It is to be considered that the riboflavin-producing factor and the growth factor are quite different, and that the formation of riboflavin may be in close connection with the autolysis of mycelium.
