In April, one-year-old Japanese red pine seedlings were transplanted into pots containing soil. Tagged ammonium sulfate was applied to the seedlings in April, July, and September. The seedlings were sampled in April, July, September, and December. As the absorbed nitrogen was composed of not only the applied nitrogen but also soil nitrogen, a method was developed to determine the amount and distribution of nitrogen that was absorbed during various periods. Most of newly absorbed nitrogen was found in the current year's needles and the roots. The nitrogen in these needles was translocated to other parts after a few months, whereas in the roots, nitrogen absorbed during various periods increased with time. About 70% of the nitrogen in seedlings was detected in old needles in April, and two thirds of it seemed to be translocated to new needles by July. This result suggests that old needles served as a major storage place for nitrogen.
