The stability of slopes on the granite area was discribed by discriminant analysis of quantification. The criteria concerned with the discrimination of the slope stability are indicated by soil slips on slopes. The area studied is a section of Sangun mountainous district in northern Kyushu. Soil slips, which were chosen as the subject of the study, were created by heavy rain (maximum hourly rainfall : 115 mm) on July in 1973. The geomorphological survey map was covered with a grid of 100 m. 473 meshes were sampled at random from total 1,892 meshes. The occurrence of soil slips and factors of topography and vegetation were read on each sample mesh. As a result of analysis, the degree of influence of factors upon the slope stability became smaller in order of vegetation, aspect, number of small channels, slope angle, horizontal type of slope, vertical type of slope. The following categories acted as instability against soil slips : stand age of less than 20 years, aspect of NE, SE and S, number of small channels larger than one, slope angle larger than 30°, horizontal and vertical type of slope concave. The fitness grade of discrimination was 79.2%.
