Wood indicates swelling and shrinkage by moisture changes, and this is one of the large defects of wood used as materials. Swelling and shrinkage of wood are decreased to close the active hydroxyl groups of cellulose and lignin by treating wood at vapor reaction with acetic anhydride and pyridine.So the experiments was made to determine the best volume of the additional pyridine to acetic anhydride by the wood of "hinoki" (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc). (thichness 1 mm)The results of study are as follows ;(1) The treatment produces the increase of the weight, but the specific gravity of the treated sample is not much larger than that of the untreated one because of the increase of the volume.(2) The treated sample is excellent on the property of moisture absorption especially on the swelling as compared with the untreated one.(3) A sample which additional volume of pyridine is 50 c.c. to 100 c.c. of acetic anhydride indicates the largest increasing percentage of weight and the smallest swelling at moisture absoption. Compared with the untreated case, the increase of weight is 30% and the swelling is under 1/6.(4) The colour of the sample changes slightly, and the lustre is lost by this treatment. This may be considered defects of this method.
