Three sample areas were chosen from a 41-years-old artificial stand of Cryptomeria japonica D. DON. (Sugi) in Daigo District, Ibaraki Prefecture. The 1st area was at the valley, the 2nd was at the middle, and the 3rd was at the peak. Sample trees were respectively taken from each sample area.The distributions of compressive strength and quotient of quality within stem of each sample tree were examined.The results of this study are as follows : (1) In the case of the same year of age, the larger the increment of tree is, the smaller its compressive strength of wood is.(2) The distribution width of compressive strength in frequency curve is large when the increment of the tree is large.(3) The frequency curve of specific gravity indicates a left-inclined type.(4) The correlatin between compressive strength and specific gravity was recognized only in the largest sample tree.(5) In two trees which have larger increment, compressive strength increases in parallel with height above ground within the clear length and in three trees it rapidly decreases just above the clear length and then gradually increases but rapidly near the tree top.(6) In the clear trunk the points which have average compressive strength are respectively 30〜45%, 25% and 30% of tree height.(7) In two trees quotient of quality is largest at the point of 2m under the limb, that is, at 50% of tree height, and is smallest at the top. In another tree it is largest at 25% of tree height and then decreases with height above ground and increases rapidly at the tree top.(8) The smaller the increment of tree is, the larger its quotient of quality is.(9) Compessive strength is smallest at the parts somewhat separated from the center or at the center and increases gradually towards outer parts, but decreases at the sapwood of one tree.(10) Quotient of quality is smallest at the center and increases towards outer parts, but at the sapwood it increases or decreases slightly.(11) Comqressive strength is larger on the south side than on the north side and quotient of quality is largest on the east side and smallest on the north side but these results may be not a general tendency.
