Read channels such as PRML systems are key technologies in HDD design, and are often evaluated by computer simulation using a read/write channel model as well as an actual R/W channel such as a spin-stand. In PRML read-channel simulations, signicant phenomena such as media noise, MR nonlinearity and thermal asperity should be taken into account, in order to make the simulation results similar to those obtained with a virtual drive. In this review, magnetic recording channel simulation is explained by adopting a perpendicular magnetic recording R/W channel model that takes account of the above phenomena.
