The effect of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant is dramatically suppressed by nanoscale grain refinements and magnetic softening occurs. This softening process of nanocrystalline materials can be well described by a statistical argument, the so-called random anisotropy model (RAM). The classical single-phase RAM has been extended over the past decade for the purpose of giving a more realistic account of the softening process in actual systems. The extended RAMs can describe the magnetic softening process in the systems with multi-phase components or under the influence of uniaxial anisotropies. In this paper, research on the extended RAMs is reviewed and the applicability of the model is discussed for the original and extended RAMs along with some examples.
