Magnetization Behavior of Polycrystalline Ferro/Antiferromagnetic Exchange Coupled Systems

The magnetization behavior of polycrystalline ferromagnetic(F)-antiferromagnetic(AF) exchange-coupled layer systems is explained based on an extended Fulcomer & Charap's model, in which the directional distribution of the easy axes plays a significant role in governing the magnetization process. In order to cover the whole range of AF-layer thickness Neel's spin fanning or planar wall model is incorporated into the model. It is shown that most of the magnetic phenomena observed in the F-AF polycrystalline systems are understood at least qualitatively, including the complementary relationship between the exchange bias field and coercivity enhancement, rotational nature in of the magnetization process, temperature dependence of the exchange bias field and coercivity and the memory effect observed after annealing, can be explained at least qualitatively. The model is further extended to include the direct exchange coupling between the AF-grains, which is critical to explain 360° symmetry rotational hysteresis symmetry and the training effect in hysteresis loops.
