The resonance mode of a magnetostrictive material can be controlled through spatial variation of the bias field, by selectively coupling an external ac field with a given mechanical resonance mode. This leads to the possibility of using such a device as a data carrier, which is a magnetic tag device for storing remotely readable data. This paper reports a magnetic tag device, composed of a magnetostrictive strip and a magnetic tape supplying a bias magnetic field, designed for use as a data carier. Since the device involves the application of magnetic recording technology to a 1-bit tag with magnetostrictive properties, it merits attention for its long-range reading capability, rewritability, and low price. We have investigated the magnetic tape, the design, and the practical characteristics such as the reading distance of the magnetic tag, with a view to exploiting the data carrier system. An intelligent pile system, which provides information of the tag's location, was studied to confirm the possibility of using the tag in location-detection systems for the vehicles.
