Magnetic interaction in the R_3(Fe,M)_<29> and their nitrides with R=rare earth or Y and M=Ti, V, Cr, and Mo has been investigated by means of a mean field theoretic analysis of Curie temperature. The values of the exchange interaction constants J_<Fe-Fe> and J_<R-Fe> for above compounds have been determined. J_<R-Fe> exhibits a decreasing tendency with increasing R atomic number, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Nitrogenation led to an increase of J_<Fe-Fe>. A study of magneto-volume effects resulting from nitrogenation indicates that 3d electrons in the 3:29-type R-T compounds exhibits mainly localized characteristic. An analysis of the iron magnetic moments in terms of magnetic valence model shows that the weak ferromagnetic character of the Fe-host plays a dominant role in the Y_3(Fe,M)_<29> compounds with M=V, Ti and Mo.
