Micromagnetics using the finite difference method is the approach often used to analyze the behavior of magnetic particles or magnetic thin films, but to predict their behavior more precisely by taking their shape or their irregularities into account requires the finite element method. The finite element method requires more computing power than the finite difference method, though, so careful selection of discretizing methods is needed. To ensure the best selection of methods for this purpose, we review the discretization methods that can be used with the finite element method and the details of their implementation from formulation to application, and describe one example-Saitoh's method-of a finite element method.
