A new device made from metal flakes for suppressing electromagnetic noise in the quasi-microwave band is presented. Magnetically soft flakes with a thickness below skin depth and a large aspect ratio were embedded in a dielectric matrix and electrically isolated. The flakes were oriented with their surfaces parallel to the plane of the layer. This configuration is similar to that of multi-layer magnetic films patterned into narrow strips, and excellent permeability characteristics were obtained at high frequencies. Noise suppression effects were evaluated using micro-loop antennas in the near-field mode. This new composite material was found to be a high-performance noise suppressor, superior to the conventional ferrite-rubber composites.
