Neopurpuratin production by Streptomyces propurpuratus was investigated to establish an industrial process.1. A cheaper production medium was disigned using commercially available soybean meal as a nitrogen source. By employing this medium, the recovery process for neopurpuratin was simplified.2. Neopurpuratin production was enhanced about 2-fold by using Corynebacterium amagasaki for preparing the sterile culture broth inducing neopurpuratin production instead of Bacillus sp. no. 751.3. A high neopurpuratin-producing strain, Streptomyces propurpuratus IX-30,was selected after mutagenesis with NTG. This strain produced 5,200-5,500 μg/ml of neopurpuratin under the improved fermentation conditions.4. This fermentation was done in a 1,500-l fermentor under operation conditions giving the same oxygen transfer rate as that in a 30-l fermentor.5. Through in the industrial process established, neopurpuratin yield in the fermentation was more than 5,000 μg/ml. Neopurpuratin recovery from the broth and neopurpuratin purity in the product were over 85% and 93%, respectively.
