Fig. 1 shows an electric magnet, an armature, a hammer and a typewheel which are used in a high speed printer. When the magnet is actuated by the electric current, the magnet pulls and accelerates the armature. After a movement of short distance L, the top of the armature hits the hammer, and then the hammer runs and strikes the typewheel with certain given kinetic energy. Is the short gap L between the top of the armature and the hammer useful or harmful ? This is the question which this research aims to answer. The results are as follows. If several conditions are all suitably chosen, the hammer energy in the case of suitable gap L becomes larger than the energy in the case of no gap. But if the conditions are not suitable, the hammer energy in the case of small gap L becomes less than the energy in the case of no gap. The conditions which give the usefulness of the gap L are very strict, and the, authors hesitats. to recommend the usefulness of these most favorable conditions. Practically conditions with.no gap are recommended.
