A positive type guest-host display using scattering mode is surveyed. This display can be made of a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy which contains the dichroic dye and ion compounds. The investigation of the birefringence of the liquid crystal, the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal, the concentration of the dye, and the applied voltage dependence of the contrast ratio are made. As a result high contrat positive type guest-host display is obtained by hosts of low birefringence using SHS mode, and multiplex driving higher than 1/7 duty is realized by hosts of which dielectric anisotropy are higher than -0.4.
