Three-dimensional computer graphics (CG) has been applied to the planning and design of watch products at Seiko Epson since 1994. The purpose is to shorten product development cycles by eliminating physical trial assembly. Chief technical characteristics are creation of material color parameters for watches and modeling 3D objects which makes it possible to start mass production immediately. About 30 models have been made using this CG method. We obtained good results in shortened times for the planning and design of watch products. Based on these results, we judged it possible to apply CG to special product categories such as low-priced consumer models requiring very quick market entry. In this article, we describe CG application I term of technical approach and business processes.
