This paper presents a design method of circular-arc-tooth gear used in a product such as a clock. This design method obtains the tooth shape of a gear to be engaged with the gear (e.g.small gear) whose tooth shape is already known. Basic idea is that it treats a pair of gear as a pair of cam so that when the driving gear rotates by exact one pitch of tooth, the idle gear moves by exact one pitch of tooth. As parameters for design, (κ) and (η_e) are introduced in which (κ) determines the engagement start/end points of the known gear and (η_e) is the transmission ratio at the engagement end point. By properly selecting (κ) and (η_e), a circular-arc-tooth which satisfies various purposes can be designed. Further, by using the special point of a circular-arc-tooth gear, various shapes of tooth besides circular-arc-tooth can be designed unrestrictedly.
