Optoelectronic interconnections offer a path to meet the increasing demands for interconnection bandwidth in high performance processing systems, while maintaining their cost- and power-effectiveness. In the past 5 years, significant progress has been made in the development of optoelectronic device arrays, including MQW and liquid crystal spatial light modulators, and LED and VCSEL array emitters. The availability of these device arrays has enabled the development of a variety free-space optical interconnection system demonstrations. While most are still not commercializable, these prototypes show impressive progress. This talk will review the recent progress of these systems, and discuss the critical issues for their future success.
