Interface Mechanism to Personalize a Digital Library

As the use of digital libraries, users expect more than being able to filter, retrieve and refer to library materials. They prefer to personalize the digital library materials. Two stages can be considered in the process of personalization of a digital library : collection personalization and material personalization. Our emphasis in this paper is about the meterial personalization, which allows the user to organize and integrate the library materials. However, the current interfaces for digital libraries do not provide facilities to realize the material personalization. This paper proposes an interface mechanism to address the requirements of the personalization of a digital library. The mechanism is based upon a model called the personal document model. Thee personal documents, which are instances of the model, are the user specific views in the personal library. Shallow copy technique, which is used to construct the personal documents, can safeguard the copyright and ownership of materials and create links with the original sources.
