This paper discusses current research and experience with commercially available ATM switching node systems for high-speed communication networks. These systems support frame relay and cell relay services as the initial step towards introduction of B-ISDN. The functional requirements, migration strategy, and technological background are introduced and practical ATM node system design principles are proposed, taking account of the difference in requirements from those of the ATM LAN/PBX system. These principles include a building-block ATM switch architecture, quick recovery after failure, and effective ATM traffic control. An ATM switch design concept from the viewpoint of cell loss is introduced, and the upper utilization rates of each line termination block and the required buffer size are analyzed. The buffering delay in the frame relay interface for congestion control and the processing capability of firmware for copying to the stand-by system are also analyzed. Although some ATM switching nodes have been deployed, much work is still being done on resolving problems as regards the maintainability of ATM node systems. This paper also discusses ATM nodes from the viewpoint of maintainability, and clarifies the concept of hardware maintainability by introducing efficient connection test methods using an OAM cell-handling mechanism, an ATM traffic-monitoring mechanism with QoS control, and a test cell generation/checking mechanism for in-service connection testing. A maximum VC multiplexing load-testing mechanism is also analyzed. An effective hardware failure detection/indication mechanism is also proposed to facilitate on-line software control maintainability, taking account of the corresponding software action on detection of hardware failure.
