This paper presents a medium access control(MAC)-level automatic reconfiguration algorithm for wrapback and merging of a counter-rotating dual-token-ring local area network. The algorithm guarantees MAC layer communication capabilities in a network reconfigured to provide maximum possible connectivity among dual-ring stations. Each dual-ring station reconfigures the ring at failures detected by MAC layer functins as well as by physical layer functions. When a link fails, the failed segment is isolated by the wrapback and the ring operates in wrapback mode. If additional failures occur, the ring is wrapped back further into a smaller ring or into two or more sub-rings, each of which operates as a separate ring network. Failed portions are merged into the active ring after confirmation that their MAC layer capabilities are operating properly. The algorithm is evaluated by comparison of the reconfiguration features and the times required for the wrapback and merging.
