According to Carasso and Laurent, the algorithms for interpolation by spline functions are classified into three methods: Projection method, Method using a basis and Direct resolution. So far several authors presented algorithms for the smoothing of data by spline functions, but all of them fall into the category of projection method. In this paper, it is shown that the method using a basis can be applied to the problem of smoothing. In addition, applicability of approach of Reinsch is discussed.
