The causal fungus of sheath netblotch of rice plants, reported by Matsuura in 1942 as Cylindrocladium sp. remains undetermined as to its specific name. Some investigations were carried out on the morphology, pathogenicity and cultural characters of the fungus. Each axis of conidiophore branched dichotomously 2 to 3 times, terminating in phialides. Primary, secondary, tertiary and ultimate branches were 27〜39×5〜6μ, 18〜21×4〜5μ, 10〜12×4μ and 8〜10×4μ in size respectively and each phialide bore single conidium. Main axis was club-shaped, and its apical swollen part was 20〜22×7〜11μ. Conidia were cylindric with round ends, 41〜75×2.9〜5.8μ, hyaline, and usually one-septate. The fungus in question, and the fungi on yellow lupin, blue gum and common broom identified by Terashita and Ito in 1955 as C. scoparium, were similar in pathogenicity on eleven graminaceous plants. Their cultural characters on various artificial media also resembled each other. From these results the sheath netblotch fungus of rice plant is to be inferred as Cylindrocladium scoparium MORGAN.
