Sports Physiol., Vol.8, No.2 pp.39-44, 2002. The purpose of the current study was to detremine the roles and chracteristies of six leg muscles during differnt types of underwater walking at a varicty of speeds compared with land walking. Six male subjects walked at three different speeds(0.4, .6 and 0.8 m・s-1) in a swimming pool, in a swimming flume, and on land. Surface EMG electrodes were placed on six leg muscles: tibialis anterior (TA), soleus (SOL), lanteral gastrocnemius (LG), vastus medialis (VM) rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF) muscles. The water was waist deep and the temperature was set at 29℃. The relative integrated RMG of TA, LG, VM, RF, and BF were significantly higher for the swimming pool walking at 0.8m・s-1(p<0.05) than for land walking. TA, RF, and BF EMG activation patterns in the swimming pool were significantly defferent from the land, whereas no significant differences were found in SOL, LG and VM. The EMG activation patterns made it clear that in water the subjects moved toe knee ot the higher position, then around the point of foot contact to the middle stance phase, and the BF was activated to provide support as a hip extensor. At the push-off phase, the LG produced forward movement especially for swimming pool walking. During the two types of underwater walking, the leg muscles assumed different roles and characteristics, and these results may have implications in the field of aquatic exercise and aquatic therapy.
