HAYASHI, Y., KAWAGUCHI, K. and ONARI, K., Influence of Blood Volume In Exercising Muscle on Stroke Volume Declining During Prolonged Exercise. Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.8, No.2 pp.31-38, 2002. In the present study, circulatory response during prolonged exercise, especially blood volumes in the skin and exercising muscles, were evaluated to clarify the etiology of stroke volume (SV) decline. 9 healthy male volunteers pedaled the cycle ergometer for 60 minutes at a load intensity equivalent to 50% of the predicted oxygen uptake (VO2 max. Heart rate (HR) increased by 12.5% after 60 minutes of exercise (p<0.05). SV decreased by 10.1& after 60 minutes of exercise compared to the maximal value for SV obtained after 20 minutes of exercise. Skin blood flow significantly increased in the first 40 minutes of exercise, and reached a steady state thereafter. The mean value for the total hemoglobin (total Hb) levels in exercising muscles, which used as an index of blood volume in exercising muscles, continuously increased in all subjects during the first 30 minutes of ecercise (p<0.05). Moreover, total Hb levels obtained after 50 minutes of exercise were significantly higher than those obtained after 40 minutes of exercise (p<0.05). However, total Hb levels obtained after 60 minutes of exercise were not significantly higher than those obtained after 50 minutes of exercise (p=0.30). Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the decline in SV was caused by increased blood flow in the skin and blood volume in exercising muscles during the first 40 minutes of exercise, and by increased blood volume in exercising muscles after 40 minutes of exercise. However, the rate of decline in SV was not equivalent to the rate of increase in peripheral blood flow.
