KOMIYAMA, T. and FUMOTO, M., Posture- and Activity-Dependent Modulation for Visual Facilitation of the Soleus H-Reflex in Human Subjects. Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.10, No.1 pp.7-14, 2004. The effect of visual stimulus on the Hoffmann (H-) reflex in the soleus (Sol) was examined in eleven normal human subjects. Significant facilitation occurred at a conditioning-to-test (c-t) interval of 75 ms. and continued up to a c-t interval of 400 ms after the visual stimulus while the subject was sitting relaxed (SR task). Although the facilitation showed habituation when the visual stimulus was given repeatedly, a large inter-subject varition was observed in the habituation process. The degree of visual facilitation obtained at the most effective c-t interval (i.e., 150 ms) tended to decrease when the subject maintained an upright standing posture (US task) or plantarflexion (PF task) compared with that in the SR task. In addition, the degree of the facilitation was larger in the PF task than in the US task irrespective of the exertion of the same level of EMG. The cumulative summations of the rectified and averaged EMG of the flexor carpi radialis and the Sol started to increase with a latency of 68.8±10.8 ms and 120.5±18.4 ms, respectively. These results suggest that excitatory postsynaptic input from the visual pathway to the Sol motoneuron pool was mediated by a slowly conducting descending pathway, and was regulated in a posture and activity-dependent manner.
