SPODARYK, K. and KOPEC, A., Iron Stores in Marathoners Throughout the Sport Season. Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.10, No.1 pp.1-6, 2004. The purpose of the present study was to analyse variations in iron metabolism, including body stores of this metal throughout one sport season in a group of 17 male marathoners belonging to the Polish National Team. For the determination of hematological profile of the ahtletes the red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and red cell indices have been measured. For the determination of iron stores, the levels of serum iron, transferrin, ferritin and transferrin receptor have been analysed. The serum transferrin receptor/ferritin ratio, transferrin saturation and total body iron have also been caluculated. To control plasma volume expansion and components of the so-called acute-phase muscle injury response which both are associated with exercise, the plasma albumin and C-reactive protein levels were also measured. Gradual decrease in ferritin concentration was observed in endurance trained athletes during preparation to the main sport season (from 64.2±17.8 to 53.8±17.8 μg/L) and iron stores decreased to the lowest level fo 3.3±0.9 mg/kg at the competition period of training. However, no striking differences in main hematological parameters (hemoblobin concentration, hemotocrit, red cell count and red cekk indices) were observed during successive preiods of the training season. The results show that at the end of the season, i.e. comperition period of the training, iron stores are significantly reduced, however without being considered as prelatent anemia.
