ODA, S., MIYAMOTO, N. and KIDA, N. Force Generation During Concurrent Hand Grip and Elbow Flexion or Extension. Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.6, No.4 pp97-105, 2000. We investigated maximal isometric force during concurrent contractions for hand grip (HG) and elbow flexion (EF) or extension (EE) in nine healthy human subjects (experiment Ⅰ), In our second experiments (experiment Ⅱ) we teated: (1) how elbow flexion of extention force intially sustained at submaximal levels are affected as a result of ramp contractions in hand grip, and (2) how hand grip force intially sustained at submaximal levels are affected by the prodution of ramp force in elbow flexion or extension. Surface electromyograms (WMGs) were recorded from the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS., extensor digitorum (ED), biceps branchii (BB) and latcral head of triceps branchii (TB). In experiment Ⅰ the maximal HG force simultaneously worked with EF or EE were significantly lower than the HG force exerted alone. The EF force that simultaneously worked with HG was significantly lower than the EF force alone. The EE force that simultaneously worked with HG was markedly lower than the EE force alone. In espreiment Ⅱ the EF force that was initially sustained at a submaximal level increased with increasing HG ramp contraction, whereas the EE force that was initially sustained at a submaximal level decreased as a result of HG ramp contraction. The HG force that was initially sustained at a submaximal level increased as a result of EF ramp contraction, whereas it was nto affected by the EE ramp contraction. W notable result was that the EE force reductions observed in esperiment Ⅰ and Ⅱ were not associated with a decrease in agonist TB activities. This result suggests that the EE force reducions might be expained by the net force for elbow flexion resulting from the mechanical interactions of activities in forearm multiarticular muscles.
